Wired for growth

A specialist in recovering IT waste is wired for expansion in the UK after relocating to larger premises near Portsmouth.

Oden Services (UK) signed a six-year lease on a 2,657 sq ft (247 sq m) semi-detached warehouse at Havant in a deal handled by Hughes Ellard, the Portsmouth-to-Southampton commercial property consultancy.

Unit 23, The Tanneries, Brockhampton Lane, comes with an annual rent of £11,000, rising to £13,000 in year six, with break clauses in year two and four. Hughes Ellard acted for the landlord, a private investor.

Oden, founded two years ago and employing four people, was previously at a unit two-thirds smaller at Highcroft Industrial estate, Horndean, just over six miles away.

It deals with electronic waste from scores of businesses across the country, such as IT and telecommunications equipment. As well as repairing laptops, Oden sells on recovered materials.

The firm grew on the back of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations, which came into force in 2007 and is now part of our everyday lives. All businesses using electronic and electrical equipment must comply with WEEE Regulations, with the onus on storage, collection, treatment, recycling and disposal separately from other kinds of office or factory waste.

Leanne Channon, a business space agent with Fareham-based Hughes Ellard, said: “Oden is a company playing a key role in ensuring that obsolete IT equipment doesn’t end up as landfill, and we wish the business every success at its new location.”

Oden director Paul Seward said: “Electrical and electronic waste is reportedly the fastest growing waste stream in the UK, with around 1.8 million tonnes generated every year, and we are proud to be expanding in this competitive market.
