Of course the Portsmouth city region is all about the sea and boasts an impressive coastline, including two beaches with International Blue Flag status. The area offers traditional seaside resorts ideal for families and also attracts keen watersports enthusiasts including windsurfers, rib-riders and jet-skiers. In fact, the city region is the birthplace of Windsurfing which made its first appearance in 1958 and now hosts the annual Fatface night surfing competition.

The Portsmouth city region also has an array of open spaces and rural fringes, offering a great quality of life for visitors and residents. There are numerous national and internationally designated wildlife sites and habitats across the area, including Sites of Special Scientific Interest, with two-thirds of all birds on the British list here.
