Sport

The Portsmouth city region is host of a number of world-class sailing and maritime events such as the Global Challenge, the Volvo Ocean Race, Trafalgar 200 and the International Festival of the Sea (IFOS). It is also home to the BUPA Great South Run which is Europe’s leading 10 mile running event, and attracts 21,000 runners.

Today, Portsmouth is recognised for its successful ‘Pompey’ football club who won the FA Cup in 2008. The win paves the way for a new stadium – or maybe two – to be built over the next ten years. Plans for the new stadium and training ground supports Portsmouth’s bid to host England’s World Cup. The city has been named alongside 14 others in a short-list of prospective venues for matches, should England win the race to host the tournament in either 2018 or 2022. It has been shortlisted based on its plans for the new stadium and training venues, its excellent accommodation and transport links – as well as its passion for football.

The Portsmouth city region is poised to play a major supporting role for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympics in London, already delivering fantastic training camps for a large number of Olympic disciplines. The Mountbatten Sport Centre has undergone a £20 million renovation which includes a 50m Olympic standard swimming pool plus state of the art new gym and health suite. London 2012 have recognised the potential of the new centre and it will be included in the Pre-games training camp guide for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. With London just an hours train ride away, the centre has a massive advantage and will attract world class athletes from around the world.
