‘Our vision is of a prosperous Britain; one in which we meet the challenge of de-carbonising our economy and grasp the business opportunities created by doing so. It is a vision of the UK as a global hub for low carbon innovation & manufacturing, building on our strengths in areas such as offshore wind, marine and nuclear technology to supply both our own and the world’s demand for low carbon goods and services’ (‘Investing in Low Carbon Britain’, April 2009)
The wider South Hampshire region has an existing Cleantech cluster of 600 firms, generating £1.2 billion into the local economy, some of which are located in the Portsmouth city region.
The Portsmouth city region has great potential to further develop its energy and environmental technology sectors, particularly in terms of marine energy and other renewables (such as wind), marine pollution control, geothermal, water & waste water treatment, air pollution control, and also in terms of new clean technologies in house building, retrofitting and waste management.
Recognising the importance of this emerging cluster, a number of agencies and local universities are working together on a bid for ERDF EU funding from the Competitiveness Programme 2007-13. The aim of the project is to speed up commercialisation of new marine energy technologies and help existing marine and engineering companies to exploit new market opportunities. The ultimate goal is to make the Solent an internationally recognised centre for marine energy - both energy at sea and in respect of energy consumption in shipping activities - building on the Solent’s great marine traditions.
With state-of-the-art research facilities, strong partnership-working, and a highly-skilled workforce, the Portsmouth city region is an ideal investment location and is actively encouraging environmental technology based companies to locate here.
The region has a bright future for renewable energy development, with opportunities for landowners and development sites to take advantage of local authority planning and government targets through the development of energy projects.
